The University of Tampere and its Game Research Lab as a part of the School of Information Sciences offer courses and entire degrees that provide opportunities to specialize in game studies, player research, game design and other games and play related approaches. As special courses, Game Research Lab has implemented e.g.

  • Games and Storytelling, lecture and workshop series (together with TAIK), 2003-2006
  • Master’s Course in Digital Games Research and Design, 2004-2005
  • Pelin henki: vuorovaikutteisen viestinnän koulutus pelisuunnittelun avulla, 2005-2006
  • Peliasiantuntijan koulutus, 2013

The short history of Game Studies in the University of Tampere:

  • 1999: Veikkaus donates a professorship into Hypermedia (joint between the University of Tampere and the Tampere Technical University)
  • 2002: Hypermedia established as a discipline (Bachelor level, a “minor” subject) in the University of Tampere, game studies included as an orientation option to the curriculum; Game Research Lab established
  • 2008: the start of Master’s degree studies in Hypermedia (and game studies) as a part of Information Studies
  • 2009: the new discipline, Information Studies and Interactive Media established; specialization into Game Studies available in Master’s and PhD level degrees
  • 2013: the international Master’s degree programme in Internet and Game Studies starts
